Rita is well known in the PM community and she explains the concepts, principles, and how to learn them in an easy to digest manner. I have gotten so much out of her book, I think it is one of the best resources.

2. The best companion to that study guide is a podcast that I can take with me where ever I go, it is the PM Prepcast. Cornelius Fichtner is the author of the PM Prepcast and he presents the concepts in an informative and entertaining way. This resource is amazing with more than one hundred episodes and can be played on my iPod it is my constant study companion.

3. Sample test questions. PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software for the PMP Exam: Version 6 There is nothing like practicing for the exam with questions that are worded like the exam. You can find a number of free exam questions on the web, some are pretty good, but with this software they are all together and you don’t get all of the ads that you get with the free ones.

Get Ready For The PMP Exam

Studying can be a long and difficult process. I have tried a lot of study aids, programs, and processes to improve my retention. I have a number of work books and sample PMP exam questions to help my in my studying. But, I have found what works really well for me is FLASH CARDS.

Learn PMP Principles In A Flash

Flash cards are portable. You can carry them with you where ever you go. I would shove a stack in my pocket so that I could use the time standing in line, or when I was waiting on hold on the telephone. When ever I had a spare minute, I could pull out my flash cards and do some drills.

PMP Exam Flash Cards work

The reason that flash cards seem to work is that they are both repetitive and visual. When I am studying, if I can see a short concise answer, there is a good chance that I would remember it. Using a subsection of the stack of flash cards lets me repeat the same information several times until it become second nature. Flash cards are the best way to learn the PMP Exam information, and the best way to get those cards is to create your own. Even just the process of writing down the information on the card and a hint or question about the information on the back of the card helped me with my data retention.

However, if you don’t have time to create your own flash cards, or if you are worried you will miss the most important information, then the next best thing to do is get an already created set of flash cards.

The best set that I have found is 1,750 PMP flash card from PM FLASHCARDS.

All based on the PMBOK guide v.4, these flash cards will have you not just learning the PMP Exam material, but really assimilating it, as only flash card can do. Stop studying for the PMP exam, and start really getting ready to take the Exam.

I am going to summarize her approach, which you will see, really makes sense, in the paragraphs below:

From her book on page, on page 13, is a plan for using this book and the PM FASTrack software, and Hot Topics Flashcards For Passing the PMP and CAPM Exams as a complete PMP® Exam Prep System.

Rita’s Step-By-Step Instructions, From her Book

1. Before you read this book, test yourself on 20 questions in each process group and each knowledge area using PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software for the PMP® Exam: Version 6. This will help you determine how much study time you need and which chapters to ream more carefully. This will give you a baseline from which to track your progress and study.

2.Read the material in this book for the first time, focusing on the chapters where you had the most errors in Step 1. Refer to Rita’s Process chart for each chapter, and skim through the corresponding chapter in the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: (Pmbok Guide) (Paperback) version 4. (If you are a PMI member, you can download an electronic version for free.) (The PMBOK® guide is a great reference volume, I refer to it often in my work. Keep it handy, it is very useful.)

3. As you finish a chapter, review the Quicktest terms listed on the first page of the chapter, and use the Hot Topics Flashcards to improve recall and test your understanding of that chapter. Then take and exam on the PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software. You are doing well if you score over 70 percent.

4. If at all possible, form a study group any time after you have read the book for the first time on your own. This will actually make your study time shorter and more effective! You will be able to ask someone questions, and the studying (and celebrating afterward) will be more fun. A study group should consist of only three or four people.

5. Spend more time reviewing any topics you scored poorly on before moving to Step 6.

6. Make sure you really know the material, and then take a PMP® simulation on PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software.

7. Review the questions you got wrong on the PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software. Make sure you identify in writing the specific, not general, reason you got each question wrong on the simulation. This is very important.

8. Use you list of why you got each question wrong from step 7, to study some material further. Make sure you are thinking “large project” and how proper project management should be done, whether or not you use it correctly in your real world!

9. Take your final PMP® simulation exam. You must score over 75% before you take the real exam.

10. Use the Hot Topics Flashcards to retain the information you have learned until you take the exam.

11. Pass the exam!

Replace One Step, Improve Your Exam Scores, Save LOTS of MONEY!

The second thing that I might change, is that finding a study group is hard, but reviewing the material verbally and visually is still very effective for learning the PMP® material. I would suggest the The PM Prepcast. If you can’t find a study group, the The PM Prepcast is PMP training on a podcast. You can listen to it on your commute or watch it on your computer. It is a great companion to Rita’s PMP® Exam Prep book and the PMBOK® guide. Hey, with the money you save by purchasing the PMP® Exam Simulator instead of the FASTrack software, you can get the The PM Prepcast and still have money left in your pocket!

Why a PMP® Certification?

A PMP® certification could make a big difference to your salary, and in these uncertain times, even your employability. Project Management spans every field and every discipline, so project managers are in high demand. A PMP® credential can be applied to any field so it is very flexible, and very advantageous. According to Global Knowledge, the average pay for certified PMPs is over $100,000 per year, and to boot, those that get their PMP® certification see a $15,000 to $30,000 pay increase. Now is the time to be thinking about that career move and get PMP® certified. There are some prerequisites of project management training and project management experience. Those prerequisites are spelled out here in the PMP® certification handbook, distributed by the PMI®.

Don’t Be Held Back Any Longer

What holds most project managers back from getting certified is the PMP® exam. The exam is a four hour, 200 question exam that tests the knowledge and application of the PMI’s principles and methodologies as outlined in their PMBOK guide.

How Do You Get Ready For This PMP® exam?

I’ll set out for you what I consider the best method for getting ready for the PMP® exam.

First, get a hold of the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: (Pmbok Guide) (Paperback) version 4. You can purchase a copy right here. If you are a PMI member, you can download an electronic version of the PMBOK guide for free. Here is the link, PMBOK guide v.4 (PMI Membership required), if you are a PMI member. If you are not a PMI member, but you know that you want to take the PMP® exam, then become a PMI member! The cost of the exam is over $100 less for PMI members, than for non-members, so becoming a member of the PMI saves you more on the exam than the membership costs, and you get a free downloadable copy of the PMBOK guide. You may consider buying the print copy of the PMBOK guide, however, so you can highlight it and mark it up. Get your A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: (Pmbok Guide) (Paperback) version 4 here at a hefty discount from what it would cost you at a retail store. But, get your copy of the PMBOK guide and go through it at least twice. It is a little dry, but it contains the PMI’s best practices and success principles. It is worth the read.

You Will Need More Than The PMBOK Guide To Pass

To pass the test, however, you will need more than just the PMBOK guide. The PMP® exam is more about application of principles and methodologies than about memorized information–although there are a number of things that you will just have to memorize, but understanding how to apply the principles will help you the most.

You Will Need A Manual For Application of Principles

So your second step is to pick up an application manual. The application of PMI principles is taught best from a PMP® exam prep text, or course. There a few very good texts to choose from, consider one of the following:

PMP Exam Prep, Sixth Edition: Rita’s Course in a Book for Passing the PMP® Exam

The PMP® Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try

Head First PMP®: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam

Of those three texts, Rita Mulcahy’s text is the most popular, it is very detailed and includes a bit of project management information that is not covered at all inthe PMBOK® guide. It also has activities and memorization games that can help you memorize related information.

Andy Crowe’s text follows the PMBOK® more closely and is, in my opinion, better focused on the PMBOK. It flowed better for me and I preferred it to Rita’s text.

The Head First text uses modern learning theory, with lots of graphics, highlighted text, margin notes, and other devices that catch your attention and aid in learning. It is the most entertaining of the three, and takes a more basic approach to teaching the PMP® exam knowledge base.

Add a Different Media

Thirdly, supplement with an online or podcast course. The brain works in amazing ways, you will find that you learn some things from the written material, but will pick up others from verbal or video. I would recommend The PM Prepcast.

Don’t go out and get every source that you can find, but be sure to include at least three sources of test material. You will find that each source has its strengths and weaknesses, and that having three separate sources will round out your education significantly.

Take a Lot of PMP® Practice Exam Questions

Finally, take a lot of PMP® practice exam questions. Rita has a really really good software simulation product, PM Fastrack Exam Simulation Software for the PMP® Exam: Version 6. However, the $300 price tag is kind of prohibitive. I would suggest the PMP® Exam Simulator. It features 10 base PMP® exams and thousands of PMP® exam questions in total. When studying for the PMP® exam, it is often best to keep the end in mind. I mention taking lots of practice exam questions last, because that is where it naturally falls in the process. But you can cut your study time down dramatically, if you start with the very last step.

Get The Simulation Software First

Get the simulation software FIRST! Take your very first practice PMP® exam right now. The PMP® Exam Simulator will score your test and give you the correct answers for the questions that were wrong. You can look at the sections of the practice test that you did poorly on, and begin your study there. After you have dug into the the sections that you scored the poorest on and after you have skimmed through the others, take another practice exam. How much better did you do this time? See how far you have progressed. Are your weak areas some where else now? Go back and review these areas from your study material. Do this a few times, you will start to see your scores improve and you will begin to feel much more confident about taking the PMP® exam. You will find that you WILL be ready for the PMP® Exam.

These are really good flash cards and there are enough of them that you can study them with the appropriate amount of detail. Like all flash cards, set aside the ones that you don’t need and focus on the ones you have trouble with.

I used “The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try, Fourth Edition” with these flash cards, along with the other Velociteach study aid and had no surprises when I took the PMP exam.

Passing the PMP exam is pretty difficult. About.com characterized the PMP certification as one of the toughest credentials out there. The key to passing the exam is to study the right materials. There are a lot of free material out there on the Net, but often you get what you pay for when it comes to those materials. However, there are some free sources of material that are easy to come by and carry a lot of value. The first one I am going to send to you is a free gift from me (well, a free gift from the Project Management Institute (PMI)), but I am going to pass it on to you, so it is a free value from reading my article. This gift is the PMP Credential Handbook (pdf). Now don’t start complaining now, thinking, “I don’t want to read through an entire handbook.” It is only 20 pages long—about 12 minutes of reading. But it gives you ALL of the information you need to know about obtaining the PMP credential—and you know it is accurate, because it comes straight from the PMI. The PMP exam is based on the PMBOK guide, if you are a PMI member, you can download the PMBOK guide for free. Here is the link. PMBOK guide v.4 (PMI Membership required). The PMP exam covers the knowledge base in the PMBOK guide, but the test is designed to be a test of the application of the best practices and principles outlined in the PMBOK guide, and not just a regurgitation of the fact presented there. Rita Mulcahy estimates that 50% of those who do not pass the exam, fail it because they don’t have any project management experience on projects that use the PMI methodologies. Among the things that are important to learn in the PMP vocabulary and the PMI-isms. You will need some help knowing what those are and how to spot them on the exam. You are going to need some materials that showcase the working examples of the PMI methodologies. You can find those in PMP Prep books and courses. PMP Exam Prep, Sixth Edition: Rita’s Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam is a good example of one of these texts. Andy Crowe’s text,The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try is very good as well, but for the money, I would look at the Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam, and PMP Certification For Dummies by Peter Nathan and Gerald Everett Jones texts. Both of the texts are designed for beginners and do not assume that the reader has a lot of prior knowledge of the PMP subjects. Both come with lots of sample questions and a full length PMP sample exam. The sample PMP exam that comes with the Headfirst text is downloadable from their website. The For Dummies text has a CD with sample questions on it. The For Dummies text can be purchased for under $30, a huge value.

Passing the PMP exam is pretty difficult. About.com characterized the PMP certification as one of the toughest credentials out there. The key to passing the exam is to study the right materials. There are a lot of free material out there on the Net, but often you get what you pay for when it comes to those material. However, there are some free sources of material that are easy to come by and carry a lot of value. The first one I am going to send to you is a free gift from me (well, a free gift from the Project Management Institute (PMI)), but I am going to pass it on to you, so it is a free value from reading my article.
