What Are Enterprise Environmental Factors?
What factors in your enterprise influence your projects? One of those inputs to a lot of processes is this Enterprise Environmental Factors. Usually it is seen with its almost Siamese twin, the Organization Process Assets. The Enterprise Environmental Factors comes up so often that I wanted to spend a post on it. These factors, the ones that influence your project, can be internal as well as external. They come from your enterprise, as it interacts with the project, but also from the other businesses involved in the project, from stake holders, suppliers, distributors, and consumers. These factors can constrain the project or enhance it. They can have a negative impact or a positive one on the project and on the project management options. Here are the common environmental factors to keep in mind. However, this list is not all inclusive, but only provided as a good example.
Enterprise Environmental Factors may include:
The culture, structure, and processes of a company or organization.
All industry and/or government standards and regulations surrounding your project and its execution.
Company or organization infrastructure, including facilities, capital equipment, provided services, etc.
Human resource guidelines, records, procedures, and policy.
Authorization systems, policies, and guidelines.
Market and overall economic conditions.
Risk tolerance of stakeholders.
Political climate.
The communications channels of the organization.
Databases and information systems.
Project management information systems, such as project management software and tools.
All of these factors and possibly many others are the enterprise environmental factors that influence your project. Understand these factors and work to control or influence them to keep your project on track.
